And what did it mean to be kids together? Together in those years of uncertainty, searching for those who made us feel less alone. Venerations and Goodbyes is my love letter to that liminal time in adolescence where you do not belong anywhere except the space and time you are inhabiting. The time while you wait for your life to start, often, not realizing that it already has.

These poems pause on the small moments. They celebrate the places you were able to first be free and commemorate the friends who were there alongside you. They explore what it meant to be kids together, at a certain time, in a certain place. They lament how much we carry with us and how much we eventually leave behind. We grow and change from those awkward kids. Though we don’t realize it, as days come after days and the same songs play on our playlists. We hold on to just enough, so we don’t feel it slipping away. These poems honor and mourn those moments that add up to a life.

This one is for those songs you listen to with your eyes closed
This one is for Giant’s Despair
This one is for the losers
This one is for us
This one is for being straight edge
This one is for highways
This one is for Point Park
This one is for that summer
This one is for who we were so sure we would become
This one is for the AIM away message
This one is for being one of the lucky ones
This one is for those last nights
This one is for those small town kids we were once
